Beyond Taste: How Ayurveda Actually Classifies an Herb
Two herbs can share the exact same taste on the tongue and do almost opposite things once they reach the gut.

That single fact is the reason Ayurveda, the traditional medical system of the Indian subcontinent, never stopped at taste. The classical texts built a four part system for describing what a substance actually is, and taste is only the entry point. Skip the other three and you are working with a quarter of the picture.
The short version
Rasa is taste, the first and most obvious property, and it has its own full post on this site.
Virya is heating or cooling potency, felt in the body rather than on the tongue.
Vipaka is the postdigestive effect, which can differ from the taste that went in.
Prabhava is the leftover category for effects the first three properties cannot explain.
The four together are why two herbs with the same taste can act on the body in different ways.
These four properties are also why Ayurvedic formulation combines herbs rather than leaning on any one taste.
Rasa is the first property, not the whole system
Ayurveda starts every substance's profile with rasa, its taste. Sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent are the six recognized tastes. Here rasa gets one job: it is step one of four, not the whole story.
Taste alone cannot explain why ginger and mint, both of which read as sharp or cooling in different ways on the tongue, behave so differently in the body over the course of a day. The classical texts needed three more categories to close that gap, and each one answers a question taste cannot.
Virya: the potency you feel, not the flavor you taste
Virya is a substance's heating or cooling potency, and it is judged by its effect on the body rather than by how it registers on the tongue. A pungent tasting herb is not automatically heating, and a bitter one is not automatically cooling.
The texts tested this by observation, watching what a substance did to digestion, circulation and the sense of warmth in the body over repeated use.
Ginger is a familiar example of a heating virya, which is one reason it shows up so often in Ayurvedic pairings meant to support digestion in a person with a Kapha or Vata dosha (the constitutional type Ayurveda assigns based on a person's tendencies), since both of those constitutions tend to run cool and benefit from warmth. Amalaki, the Indian gooseberry that is one of the three fruits in Triphala, runs the other way and is the cleaner illustration of the point, because it tastes sour, and sour normally sits on the heating side of the scheme, yet the classical texts record amalaki as cooling in potency all the same.
Vipaka: what happens after digestion changes the story again
Vipaka is the postdigestive effect, the transformation a substance undergoes once agni, the body's digestive fire, has fully processed it. This is the property that most surprises people the first time they hear it.
Vipaka can differ from the taste a substance started with, and that gap is exactly what taste alone was never built to explain.
This is the property that explains why classical formulation is not just taste blending. A formulator combining herbs for a specific effect on digestion or elimination has to think three steps past what the mixture tastes like in the mouth. Triphala is a clear working example of this kind of thinking, since it combines three fruits, amalaki (Indian gooseberry), bibhitaki (beleric fruit) and haritaki (myrobalan), whose individual tastes and postdigestive effects were understood to complement each other, not just to blend pleasantly.

Prabhava: the category that admits what the first three do not cover
Prabhava is the fourth property, and it is unusual as classification schemes go because it is honest about its own limits. Where rasa, virya and vipaka describe predictable qualities that follow logical rules, prabhava is reserved for a specific effect a substance has that cannot be derived from its taste, its heating or cooling nature, or its postdigestive effect alone. The texts essentially built in a category for the exception, rather than forcing every observed effect into a rule that did not fit.
I think that is one of the more intellectually honest moves in the whole system.
A framework that never admits an exception is usually hiding one, and this one names its own blind spot instead of pretending it does not have one.
Moringa is often discussed in terms that lean toward prabhava style reasoning, since Ojaska's Moringa is a 20 to 1 leaf extract at 500 mg per capsule, and the density of nutrients in moringa leaf gets attributed to more than any single taste or potency category on its own.

Reading these four properties together
1. Start with rasa
What does the substance taste like on first contact. This sets the entry point and nothing more.
2. Ask about virya
Does the tradition describe it as heating or cooling in its effect on the body, independent of taste.
3. Ask about vipaka
What happens after digestion finishes with it, and whether that differs from where it started.
4. Leave room for prabhava
Whether the texts record an effect that the first three properties do not fully account for.
Anupana, the substance an herb is traditionally taken with such as warm water, milk or honey, is chosen partly with these four properties in mind. Why this framework outlasts any single trend
This four part system is older than the idea of a supplement label, and it holds up because it was built from sustained observation rather than a single mechanism.
